President's Message...
After twenty one years I have the honour to be President of the Cambodian Association of Victoria (CAV) for the second time. CAV is a unique and one of the peak organisation that provides welfare services to the Cambodian community in South Eastern of Melbourne. This organisation was established 1985 after there was an influx of Cambodian refugees who escaped from the Khmer rouge regime to the Thailand border. From its establishment till the present, the CAV has strong support from the Cambodian Community in Victoria. It has had long record of involvement with community affairs.
After the Association purchased a block of land at 52 Queens Avenue, Springvale in year 2000 we have finished construction of a hall, four offices and bathroom facilities. Now CAV’s next objective is to demolish the old house and renovate the kitchen and four offices. We have finished the demolition and we have requested a home loan from the bank. Most importantly we continue to seek support from generous people to provide financial support.
On 31st May 2009 CAV organised a fund raiser at Teapot Chinese Restaurant. On that night we received $45,725.00 and $25,000.00 in kind to assist with the demolition of our old offices. On 12 September 2009 we hosted a night at Springvale International Reception with three star singers from Cambodia. This function made a profit of $3,449.00. During Ancestor celebration or Pchum Ben the CAV received $2,600.00 from generous donations. The Victorian Multicultural Commission has also provided funding of $10,000.00 to assist with our project.
This financial year is a good year for the CAV. From July 2009 the Association received funding from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship to employ 1.5 welfare workers for settlement services to people who newly arrived in Australia (that is have lived in Australia for less than five years). The CAV also received funding from the State Government for Home and Community Care (HACC) and from the City of Greater Dandenong for Youth Services. On behalf of the Cambodian Community I would like to send our utmost appreciation to the Rudd and Brumby’s Governments who have vision and understand the most important needs of the Cambodian Community. A special thank to Lord Mayor Penar Yesil from the City of Greater Dandenong who understood the problem of our Youth by proving support to the Association.
In the last six months the CAV organised a special reception for a Royal Cambodian Parliamentary Delegation. There were many people from the Cambodian Community attending in a meeting. After speeches from delegations many people asked questions and sought answers the delegations about Government corruptions, Freedom of speech and democracy in Cambodia. The delegation also left with many suggestions from the crowd.
The CAV continues to welcome to any members in the Cambodian community to be involved in the Committee’s Management, to suggest ideas, to provide constructive criticism of service of the Association and to provide financial donations to the Association.
Once again on behalf of the Committee Management I would like to express my sincere thanks to our volunteers Annie Boulton, Dy Muy, Sok Tin and Soy Ti Chhav who work tirelessly for the Cambodian community. Finally a special thank to the generous donors.
The Association wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and very happy New Year.
